In addition to forming an unbroken film, the solid they contain can absorb and thereby neutralize certain noxious chemicals before they ever reach the skin ▪ Like ointments, pastes form an unbroken relatively water impermeable film ▪ Unlike ointments, the film is opaque and therefore, an effective sun block consequently o Gels (Jellies) ▪ Gels are semisolid coherent systems in which a liquid phase is constrained within a polymeric matrix (consisting of natural or synthetic gum) having a high degree of physical or chemical crosslinking ▪ Gels are transparent or translucent non-greasy semisolid gels ▪ Some gels are as transparent as water itself, have an aesthetically pleasing state while others are turbid because the polymer is present in colloidal aggregates that disperse light ▪ Gels are used for medication or lubrication o Poultices ▪ Are soft, viscous, pasty preparations for external use ▪ Poultice must retain heat for a considerable time because they are intended to supply warmth to inflamed parts

For example the absorption of tetracycline is inhibited in the presence of milk ▪ Drugs may affect gastric emptying and this may affect absorption ▪ Inappropriate for patient with nausea and vomiting ▪ Drug may have unpleasant taste and odour ▪ Inappropriate if patient cannot swallow or is unconscious ▪ Drugs may irritate gastric mucosa ▪ Some of the drugs may be partially absorbed or destroyed by the gastric juices example insulin • Sublingual route o The medication is placed under the tongue and allowed to dissolve slowly ▪ Because of the rich blood supply in this region, there is rapid onset of the action ▪ The patient is instructed not to move the drug with the tongue not to eat or drink anything until the medication has completely dissolved o Advantage of sublingual route administration ▪ Same as oral route, plus ▪ Drug can be administered for the local effects ▪ More potent than oral because the drug directly enter the circulation and bypasses the liver metabolism(first pass effect) o Disadvantage of sublingual route administration ▪ If swallowed drug may be inactivated by gastric juice ▪ Drug must remain under the tongue until dissolved and absorbed • Buccal route o The tablet or capsule is placed in the oral cavity between the

That is should not contain microorganism and endotoxins o Should not allow leakage of the contents o Allow stability at recommended storage temperature o Should not react chemically with inside contents i.e. active ingredient and excipients STEP 4: Types of Pharmaceutical Containers and Closures (70 minutes) • Classification of the containers depend on the materials used to make them and their shapes Classification of containers according to their materials: • There are three main types of containers according to their materials: o Glass containers o Plastic containers o Metal containers Glass containers • They are widely used for liquid and solid products o Advantages of glass: ▪ Can be easily moulded into a rigid structure of any shape and size required ▪ Available in clear or amber (light resistant) forms ▪ It can be hermetically sealed or by removal closures ▪ Impermeable to moisture and atmospheric gases ▪ Cheap and easily available ▪ Easy to label o Disadvantages ▪ It is fragile – easily broken when dropped or knocked ▪ It is heavy – high transport cost & risk charges ▪ It may release alkali to aqueous contents • Types of glass containers o Bottles o Oral and External medicines bottles ▪ Amber medicine bottles for internal use ▪ Fluted (ribbed) bottles for external use o Ear, Nasal and Eye medicine Bottles ▪ Amber Fluted (ribbed) on four sides, hexagonal in shape and fitted with a rubber teat and a glass dropper – label fixed on the plain surface o Tablets and capsules containers ▪ Amber glass fitted with screwed desired closure- good protection of tablets and capsules Plastic Containers • A collective term used to describe various polymeric
