STEP 1: Presentation of Session Title and Learning Tasks (5 minutes)

STEP 3: Roles of a Manager to Pharmaceutical Services (20 minutes)
o Safe and effective drug use control—Are drugs secure, in-date, and available when
needed?
o People—do you have the right people in the right positions?
o Productivity—Are people being used effectively and efficiently?
o Fiscal resources/budget management—Are you spending too much? Too little?
o Compliance—are you practicing consistently with applicable laws, rules, regulations,
standards, and guidelines?
o Vigilance—Do you know what is going on in your area? Learn to manage by walking
around.
o Managers must have a strong commitment to patient care.
o Managers must design systems that achieve comprehensive drug-use control and
appropriate drug therapy outcomes.
o A departmental organizational structure should recognize, empower, and encourage the
growth of practitioners and practice leaders.
