Definition of phlebotomy

Phlebotomy, is the practice of drawing blood from patients for various medical purposes such as diagnostic testing, blood donation, transfusion, research or therapeutic treatment.

A phlebotomist, is the person who is trained in venipuncture technique or a person performing phlebotomy procedure.

We do phlebotomy for different purposes such as

Diagnostic testing.

Blood donation.

Transfusion.

Research.

Therapeutic treatment.

DID YOU KNOW THAT. There is no any industry that manufactures blood instead is donated from human being to serve human blood needs

A TRAY FOR PHLEBOTOMY

A TRAY FOR PHLEBOTOMY, Is the sterilized and organized tray in which all requirements needed for phlebotomy procedures are kept.

Preparing a phlebotomy tray is an essential step in ensuring a successful blood collection procedure.

The successful blood collection procedure involves all safety precautions against infections from the phlebotomist or from the patient, to ensure safe blood collection.

PROCEDURES OF PREPARING A TRAY FOR PHLEBOTOMY

There are procedures to follow when preparing the tray for phlebotomy process these procedures are as follows.

Gather the necessary supplies.

Organize the tray.

Check the expiry date.

LEARNING SECTION 7CONTENTS ↑

1. Gather the necessary supplies.

Gather the necessary supplies.

This is the first procedure of preparing the phlebotomy tray which involves assembling of all supplies you will need for the phlebotomy procedure these supplies includes.

COMPONENTS OF PHLEBOTOMY TRAY

Gloves.

Alcohol swabs.

Tourniquet.

Blood collection tubes

Needles (various sizes)

Syringes

Adhesive bandages

Gauze pads

Tape

Sharps container

LEARNING SECTION 8CONTENTS ↑

Gloves.

The gloves are well gathered in the Tray for phlebotomy.

Usually examination disposable gloves are used in the phlebotomy procedure

They are used by a phlebotomist to prevent him or herself from infections.

LEARNING SECTION 10CONTENTS ↑

Alcohol swabs.

They stand as disinfectants to all microorganisms that may be present at the site of injection.

The alcohol swabs are put in a tray at a special site, they may be present in their small box of storage or loose.

LEARNING SECTION 12CONTENTS ↑

Tourniquet

There different kinds of tourniquet used in phlebotomy.

The tourniquet is put in the phlebotomy tray to enable the phlebotomist to increase the pressure of the blood in the donor*s veins so as the support the procedure accurately.

Blood collection tubes.

These are special vessels that are used for temporally storage of the collected blood before other diagnostic procedures.

The blood collection tubes are of different types but the commonly used are the Vacutainer tubes. These tubes come in a variety of colors to indicate the additives or anticoagulants present in the tube for example,,

Red top tubes. These tubes typically contain no additives and are used for serum collection.

lavender top tubes, for whole blood or plasma collection, they contain EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid as an anticoagulant )

Green top tubes. For plasma collection and contain heparin as anticoagulant.

Blue top tubes. For coagulation studies and contains citrate as the anticoagulant.

Other blood collection tubes.

SST(Serum Separator Tube) for separating serum from clot cells after centrifugation. They are commonly used for chemistry tests that require serum samples.

Gray top tubes. These tubes contain sodium fluoride as an anticoagulant and potassium oxalate as a preservative. They are used for glucose testing.

Yellow top tubes. For blood bank studies, DNA testing, and HLA phenotyping. as they contain ACD (acid citrate dextrose) as an anticoagulant.

Royal blue top tubes. For testing toxicology studies.

Pearl white top tubes. For molecular diagnostics.

Black top tubes. Used for ESR(erythrocyte sedimentation rate)

Syringe and needle.

These are for puncturing the site of injection.

The syringes and needles put in the tray for phlebotomy have to be sterile and well packed for the safe phlebotomy procedure.

They have to be disposed after a single use.

They can be used to stop blood on the injected site of the donor,

They are to be disposable after a single use.

Sharps container

This is the special box that is used to dispose the used sharps after the procedures for example after using the needle in phlebotomy a phlebotomist must dispose it into the sharp box.

It is one of the parts of the tray for phlebotomy.

2. Organize the tray for phlebotomy.

Organize the tray for phlebotomy.

Lay out a clean and, flat surface where you will assemble your phlebotomy tray.

Arrange all the supplies in a systematic order to ensure easy access during the procedure.

You may want to organize them in a way that follows the sequence of steps you will take during blood collection.

LEARNING SECTION 25CONTENTS ↑

3. Check Expiry Dates.

Check Expiry Dates.

Before proceeding with the blood draw, carefully check the expiration dates on all supplies to ensure they are within the recommended timeframe.

Used expired supplies can compromise the accuracy of the results and pose risks to both the patient and health care provider

LEARNING SECTION 26CONTENTS ↑

Advantages of preparing a phlebotomy tray

Organization. By assembling all necessary supplies in a systematic order on a tray, phlebotomists can easily access the items they need during the blood draw process.

Efficiency. Having a well prepared phlebotomy tray saves time by eliminating the need to search for supplies or interrupt the blood collection process to retrieve missing items, this efficiency allows phlebotomists to complete procedures more quickly, reducing the patient discomfort and waiting times.

Standardization. A standardized phlebotomy tray can setup can ensures consistency in the equipment used for the procedures and health care settings, this helps to maintain quality control and adherence to best practices in phlebotomy.

Infection control. properly Preparing a phlebotomy tray includes ensuring that all supplies are clean, sterile and withing their expiration dates. This attention to infection control measures reduces the risk of contamination and helps protect both healthcare provider and patients from potential infections.

Professionalism. Having a well arranged phlebotomy tray reflects professionalism and competence in the heath care settings.

Client safety. By promoting accurate specimen collection and minimizing the likelihood of errors or complications during blood draws.

LEARNING SECTION 27CONTENTS ↑

EFFECTS OF POOR PREPARATION OF THE PHLEBOTOMY TRAY.

Poor preparation of phlebotomy tray can result into the following effects

Increased risk of contamination.

Risk of needlestick injuries.

Difficult in finding supplies.

Potential for mislabeling or misidentification.

Reduced efficiency.
