Session 4: Calculations of Unit of Measure Relating to Length

Total Session Time: 120 minutes

Prerequisites

• None

Learning Tasks

By the end of this session students are expected to be able to:

• Define the unit of measure of length
• Convert different measures of length

Resources Needed:

SESSION CONTENTS

STEP 1: Presentation of Session Title and Learning Tasks (5 minutes)

READ or ASK students to read the learning tasks and clarify

ASK students if they have any questions before continuing.

STEP 2: Unit of Measure of Length (40 minutes)

Activity: Demonstration (30 minutes)

DIVIDE students in small manageable groups.

PREPARE equipment and materials needed for demonstration

POSITION students so that everyone can see and hear

REVIEW steps of that skill with students

DEMONSTRATE

The procedures of measuring different length by using different

measures of length

ALLOW one student from each group to do a return demonstration and let

others comment on it

CLARIFY and SUMMARIZE by using the content below

• Length may be defined as the longest extent of anything as measured from

end to end

• The meter (m) is the fundamental unit of this system
• There are many instruments used to measure length including rulers, tape

measures, micrometers, gauges and vernier calipers

• There are also instruments that make use of scientific principles to

deduce length where it may not be directly measured

• Measuring lengths accurately has been a driving force behind much of

human civilization

• The selection of measuring device depends on the shape of the thing to be

measured

STEP 3: Different Measures of Length (40 Minutes)

Activity: Small Group Discussion ( 20 minutes)

DIVIDE students into small manageable groups

ASK students to discuss on the following question

What are the different measures of length?

ALLOW students to discuss for 15 minutes

ALLOW few groups to present and the rest to add points not mentioned

CLARIFY and SUMMARIZE by using the contents below

• The following are the different measures of length:
o 1 kilometer (km) = 1000 meters
o 1 hectometer (hm) = 100 meters
o 1 dekameter (dam) = 10 meters
o 1 meter (m) = 1meter
o 1 decimeter (dm) = 0.1 meter
o 1 centimeter (cm) = 0.01 meter
o 1 millimeter (mm) = 0.001 meter
o 1 micrometer (µm) = 0.000,001 meter
o 1 nanometer (nm) = 0.000,000,001 meter
o 1 micrometer (µm) = 0.000,001 meter

Table 1: Measure of length

|Name of Unit |Abbreviation |Equivalent to |

|1 kilometre |Km |1000m |

|1 metre |M |1000mm(=0.0001km) |
|1 decimetre |Dm |100mm(=0.1m) |
|1 centimetre |Cm |10mm(=0.01m) |
|1 millimetre |Mm |1000 micron(=0.001m) |
|1 micrometre |micron/µm |1000nm(=nanometre) |

STEP 4: Key Points (10minutes)

• There are two most common measurements of length; millimeters and meter
• Millimeter is often written as mm and meter as m
• One meter comprised of 1000 millimeter (1 m = 1000 mm)

STEP 7: Evaluation (25 minutes)

• What is the unit of measure of length?
• Convert the following units of measure of length into meter: 100mm,

360cm, 80km, 123500µm, 0.045hm and 250 dm
