SESSION CONTENTS

STEP 1: Presentation of Session Title and Learning Tasks (5 minutes)

READ or ASK students to read the learning tasks and clarify

ASK students if they have any questions before continuing.

STEP 2: Unit of Measure of Weight (50 minutes)

Activity:Demonstration (30 minutes)

DIVIDE students in small manageable groups.

PREPARE equipment and materials needed for demonstration

POSITION students so that everyone can see and hear

REVIEW steps of that skill with students.

DEMONSTRATE

The procedures of measuring weight by using different weighing scales

ALLOW one student from each group to do a return demonstration and let

others comment on it

CLARIFY and SUMMARIZE by using the content below

• Weight: A body’s relative mass or the quantity of matter contained by

it, giving rise to a downward force or heaviness.

• The unit of weight in the metric system is the Gram (g)
• There are two most common measurements of weight: milligram and gram
• The selection of measuring of weight depends on the quantity of the

substance to be weighed and the sensitivity and accuracy of the weighing

scale (instrument)

• Examples of commonly used weighing scales in the pharmacy practice are

electronic balance, analytical balance and beam balance

• The selection of weighing balances depends on the task at hand, from

highly sensitive electronic analytic balances and prescription balances

in extemporaneous compounding procedures to large-capacity scales in the

industrial manufacturing and production of pharmaceutical products

• Each instrument used must meet the established standards for sensitivity,

accuracy and capacity

STEP 3: Different Measures of Weight (30 Minutes)

Activity: Small Group Discussion ( 20 minutes)

DIVIDE students into small manageable groups

ASK students to discuss on the following question

What are the different measures of weight?

ALLOW students to discuss for 15 minutes

ALLOW few groups to present and the rest to add points not mentioned

CLARIFY and SUMMARIZE by using the contents below

• The following are the different measures of weight:
o 1 kilogram (kg)= 1000 gram
o 1 hectogram (hg)= 100 gram
o 1 dekagram (dag)= 10 gram
o 1 gram (g)= 1gram
o 1 decigram (dg) = 0.1 gram
o 1 centigram (cg) = 0.01 gram
o 1 milligram (mg) = 0.001 gram
o 1 microgram (µg) = 0.000,001 gram

Table 1: Measures of Weight

|Name of Unit |Unit symbol |Equivalent to |

|1 kilogram |Kg |1000g |

|1 gram |G |1000mg(0.001kg) |

|1 milligram |Mg |1000mcg(0.001g) |

|1 microgram |Mcg |1000ng(0.001mg) |

|1 nanogram |Ng |1000pg(0.001µg) |

STEP 4: KeyPoints (15 minutes)

• There are two most common measurements of weight: milligram and gram
• Milligram is often written as mg and gram as g
• One gram is comprised of 1000 milligram (1 g= 1000mg)

STEP 5: Evaluation (20 minutes)

• What are the units of measure of weight?
• Convert the following units of measure of weight into milligram; 250g,
0.003kg, 7.4 g, 10g , 188000µg and 100g
