SESSION CONTENTS

STEP 1: Presentation of Session Title and Learning Tasks (5 minutes)

READ or ASK students to read the learning tasks and clarify

ASK students if they have any questions before continuing.

STEP 2: Dilution by Using Alligation Alternate (40 Minutes)

• Alligation

o Alligation is an arithmetic method of solving problems that involve

the mixing of solutions or mixtures of solids possessing different

percentage strengths

• Alligation Alternate

o This is a method by which we can calculate the number of parts of two

or more components of a given strength when they have to be mixed to

prepare a mixture of desired strength

Example:

In what proportion should alcohol of 95% and 50% strengths be mixed to

make 70% alcohol?

Solution for the above question

95

• The following is the solution of the above exercise:

50

• The following is the solution for the above exercise:
40% × 500ml =200ml
21%× 400ml = 84ml
0% × 100ml = 0ml

Totals 1000ml 284ml

284 (ml) ÷ 1000(ml) =0.284 × 100 = 28.4%

STEP 4: Key Points (5 minutes)

• Alligation is a method to solve problems which involves mixing solutions

or mixtures of solids possessing different percent strengths

• Alligation alternate is a method to calculate the number of parts of two

or more components of a known strength that when mixed provide a mixture

of desired strength

• You can calculate the proportions needed to prepare a given strength

solution, given the % strength of the individual components using the

alligation alternate

• Alligation medial is a method by which the ‘weighted average’ percentage

strength of a mixture of two or more substances of known quality and

concentration may be easily calculated

STEP 5: Evaluation (15 minutes)

• What is the percentage of zinc oxide in an ointment prepared by mixing
200 g of 10% ointment, 50 g of 20% ointment, and 100 g of 5% ointment?
• A hospital pharmacist wants to use three lots of zinc ointment containing

respectively, 50%, 20% and 5% of zinc ointment. In what proportion should

they be mixed to prepare a 10% zinc oxide?

STEP 6: Take Home Assignment (15 minutes)

Activity: Take home Assignment (15 minutes)

ASK each individual student to do the following assignment

In what proportion should 20% benzocaine ointment be mixed with an

ointment base to produce a 2.5% benzocaine ointment?

ALLOCATE time for students to do the assignment and submit
