By the end of this session students are expected to be able to:

• Define the terms pharmaceutical personnel and health care teams

• Describe roles of pharmaceutical personnel in health care services

• Explain the relationship between pharmaceutical personnel and other health personnel in

the service delivery

Resources Needed:

• Flip charts, marker pens, and masking tape

• Black/white board and chalk/whiteboard markers

• LCD projector and computer

• Note books and Pens

SESSION CONTENTS

STEP 1: Presentation of Session Title and Learning Tasks (5 minutes)

READ or ASK students to read the learning tasks and clarify

ASK students if they have any questions before continuing.

STEP 2: Definition of Pharmaceutical Personnel (5 minutes)

Activity: Buzzing (5 minutes)

Ask students to pair in two and buzz on the following:

• What is a pharmaceutical personnel?

ALLOW few students to respond

WRITE their responses on the flip chart/board

CLARIFY and SUMMARISE by using the content below

• Pharmaceutical personnel are all staff working in pharmaceutical unit or area.

• Health care is health services provided to health customers or consumers.

• Health care teams are all heath care teams providing health services to health service

clients.

STEP 3: Roles of Pharmaceutical Staff in Pharmaceutical Management

Team (30 minutes)

Activity: Small Group Discussion ( 20 minutes)

DIVIDE students into small manageable groups

ASK students to discuss on the following question

• What are roles of pharmaceutical staff in pharmaceutical management team?

ALLOW students to discuss for 15 minutes

ALLOW few groups to present and the rest to add points not mentioned

CLARIFY and SUMMARIZE by using the contents below:

• Production of pharmaceutical products depending on the level of production

• Validation by assessing and documenting all equipment and processes to ensure that an

action will be taken.

• Quality Assurance – monitor the processes and procedures to ensure set standards are

met.

• Quality Control – provide testing and checks throughout the service process to maintain

standards.

• Regulatory Affairs – deal with the applications and paperwork surrounding regulations so

that products will be used as per the set regulations.

• Operations – ensures the continuous functioning of the pharmaceutical unit as laid down

work distribution.

• Research & Development – This will depend on the level of the pharmaceutical unit as at

lower level they may conduct operational research on medicines or product supplied to

clients. But at higher level in labs they may identify molecules that could be used in

medications, or on current medications to improve the products.

• Other – includes areas of supply chain, Logistics, Marketing, HR, Warehouse, Finance,

etc.

STEP 4: The Relationship Between Pharmaceutical Personnel and Other

Health Personnel (40 minutes)

Activity: Brainstorming (5 minutes)

Ask students to brainstorm on the following question:

• What is the relationship between pharmaceutical personnel and other health

personnel?

ALLOW few students to respond?

WRITE their responses on the flip chart/ board

CLARIFY and SUMMARISE by using the content below

• All serve same health clients

• All are under one major set of health team

• All depend on each other example a doctor will attend a client, demand medical tests

from lab, radiology, etc. before concluding what type of medicine to be given to a patient.

Later will recommend medicine to be finally given by a pharmaceutical staff.

STEP 5: Roles of Pharmaceutical Leaders (20 minutes)

• Leading the process of planning pharmaceutical services

• Leading group members at pharmaceutical units

• Linking pharmaceutical staff with other health units‘ staff

• Representing pharmaceutical interest in respective organization departmental meeting

• Training and guiding their followers

• Writing pharmaceutical reports

STEP 6: Key Points (5 minutes)

• Pharmaceutical personnel are all staff working at pharmaceutical unit.

• Pharmaceutical staff or personnel depend on other health staff as their service

complement each other

• Pharmaceutical staff plays a significant role in health care system.
