Clinical features of denture induced hyperplasia
Diagnosis of denture induced hyperplasia
Management of denture induced hyperplasia
CONTENT…….
DENTURE INDUCED HYPERPLASIA: is reactionary lesion to ill-fitting dentures.it is mostly asymptomatic, but the patients may present pain in case of ulceration. example of denture induced hyperplasia is epulis fissuratum,typically appears as a hyperplastic fold or ridge of tissue along the denture border,usually in the vestibule areas of the mouth
ETIOLOGY OF DENTURE INDUCED HYPERPLASIA; is multifactorial and several condition contributing factors; like chronic iritation,mechanical factor,e.g design, fit and material of the denture
CAUSES OF DENTURE INDUCED HYPERPLASIA
1: III-fitting dentures
Poorly adapted dentures that do not properly fit the underlying alveolar ridge can cause chronic irritation and trauma to the total mucosa
2 mechanical factors
Factors such as the design,materials, and edges of the denture can contribute to the development of denture induced hyperplasia
3: inflammation
Underlying inflammation,either due to poor oral hygiene, infection,or an allergic reaction to the denture material,can exacerbate the hyperplastic response.the presence of inflammation can further stimulate the growth of thehyperplastic tissue.
4: genetic predisposing;
Some individuals may have a genetic predisposition to developing fibrotic or hyperplastic lesions in response to chronic irritation or trauma
5: immunological factors
The immune systems response to the presence of a foreign material.immunological reaction can trigger an inflammatory reaction response to sitimulate the growth of excess fibrous tissue
6: poor denture hygiene
Inadeguate cleaning and failure to remove the denture for extended periods can lead to the accumulation of plaque.
CLINICALFEATURES
1: localized or diffuse enlargement
The hyperplastic lesion can appear as a localized,focal enlargement or as a more diffuse,generalized overgrowth of the oral mucosa
2: smooth or nodular surface
The surface of thehyperplastic tissue can range from smooth and uniform to a more nodular or lobulated appearance
3: color variation
The color of the hyperplastic tissue can vary from normal pink color of the oral mucosa to a more reddish or erythematous appearance
Content…..
4: consistency and texture;
The hyperplastic is tissue is typically firm, resilient, and often has a fibrous consistency
It may feel doughy or have a rubbery texture upon palpation
5: Absence of malignant characteristics;
Denture –induced hyperplasia is a benign condition and does not exhibit features of malignancy such as rapid growth, ulceration, or invasive behavior
`content………?
appearance in relation to the denture
Hyperplastic tissue is typically found in close proximity to the denture,either along the borders r in areas where the denture,exerts the most pressure or friction
7: symptomatology
Patient with denture induced hyperplasia may experience varying degree of symptoms including; discomfortor pain when wearing the denture
Difficulty with denture retention or stability
Altered speech or chewing ability due to the enlarged tissue
DIAGNOSIS OF DENTURE INDUCED HYPERPLASIA
1: patient history
2: clinical examination
3: denture evaluation
4: diagnosis
Biopsy
Radiographic image
5 clinical correlation
MANAGEMENT OF DENTURE INDUCED HYPERPLASIA
1: oral hygiene instruction
2: pharmacological therapy
3surgical intervention
4: denture adjustment or replacement

Additional Study Notes
This section is separated from the source slides to make the lesson easier to revise.
Supplementary learning: For each oral lesion or condition, revise the definition, common site, causes or associated factors, clinical appearance, important differential features, investigations where relevant, complications and general management principles within the learner’s scope.
