SESSION OVERVIEW

SESSION CONTENTS

STEP 1: Presentation of Session Title and Learning Tasks (5 minutes)

READ or ASK students to read the learning tasks and clarify

ASK students if they have any questions before continuing.

STEP 2: Meaning of Procurement Cycle (5 minutes)

The procurement cycle includes most of the decisions and actions that

determine the specific medicine quantities obtained, prices paid, and

quality of medicines received. Procurement is defined here as the process

of purchasing supplies directly from national or multinational private or

public suppliers; purchasing through global agencies and procurement

mechanisms or regional procurement systems; or purchasing from

international procurement agents. These sources may be used individually or

in combination to meet the entire range of pharmaceutical needs.

• Determine quantities needed

• Reconcile needs and funds

• Determine procurement method

• Locate and specify suppliers

• Specify contract terms

• Monitor order status

• Receive and check medicines

• Make payments

• Distribute medicines

• Collect consumption information
