Chick Embryo Development: Amniotic Cavity, Yolk Membranes and Beak Formation (Part 2)
Explore “Amniotic Cavity, Yolk Membranes and Beak Formation” in this Chick Embryo Development lesson. Part 2 of the five-part series brings together the source material and lesson topics. Use the contents links to find a section, read the notes, and consult the complete original teaching slides below.

Lesson topics
- Development of the amniotic cavity, which will surround the embryo
- Sensible increase in the embryo’s size; the embryo takes a C shape:
- The vitelline membrane continues to grow and now surrounds more than half the yolk.
- Thinning of the neck which now clearly separates the head from the body.

Development of the amniotic cavity, which will surround the embryo
Development of the amniotic cavity, which will surround the embryo Filled with amniotic fluid, protects the embryo and allows it to move. Appearance of the allantoic vesicle: it plays a major role in calcium resorption, respiration and waste storage. GURRAM SRINIVAS
Sensible increase in the embryo’s size; the embryo takes a C shape:
Sensible increase in the embryo’s size; the embryo takes a C shape: the head moves closer to the tail. Extension of limbs. Differentiation of the fingers of the inferior limbs. GURRAM SRINIVAS
The vitelline membrane continues to grow and now surrounds more than half the yolk.
The vitelline membrane continues to grow and now surrounds more than half the yolk. Fissure between the first, second and third fingers of the upper limbs, and between the second and third fingers of the lower limbs. The second finger is longer than the others. GURRAM SRINIVAS
Thinning of the neck which now clearly separates the head from the body.
Thinning of the neck which now clearly separates the head from the body. Formation of the beak. The brain progressively enters the cephalic region It progressively grows smaller proportionally to the embryo’s size. GURRAM SRINIVAS
