LEARNING SECTION 3CONTENTS ↑

Introduction………..

Communicable disease; is an illness caused by infectious agents or pathogens that can spread directly from one person to another, typically through respiratory droplets, body fluids of contact with contaminated surfaces.

Examples influenza(flu), tuberculosis(TB), covid-19, HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, cholera, malaria, measles, sexual transmitted infections(STIs).

All of above diseases if not treated early may lead to life threatening complication.

LEARNING SECTION 4CONTENTS ↑

Risk factors of communicable disease

The risk may vary depending on the specific disease. The following are some common factors

Close contact with infected individuals.

Poor hygiene practices. Eg not washing hands frequently, not covering cough or sneezes

Crowded or unsanitary living conditions. Eg living environment with poor sanitation ca facilitate spread of disease

LEARNING SECTION 5CONTENTS ↑

Cont………………..

Travel to areas with high diseases prevalence.

Weakened immune system.

Lack of vaccination.

Unsafe sexual practices.

Exposure to contaminated food or water.

Inadequate access to healthcare.

LEARNING SECTION 6CONTENTS ↑

Potential contaminated to water sources

Water source can become contaminated by various means, leading to potential health risks for those who consume or come into contact with the contaminated water.

Some common causes of water contamination include

Microbial pathogens; bacteria, viruses, and parasites from human or animal waste can contaminate water sources, leading to diseases such as cholera, typhoid fever and giardiasis.

LEARNING SECTION 7CONTENTS ↑

Cont………………….

Chemical pollutants; industrial runoff, agriculture pesticides and fertilizers, may introduce chemical to water sources posing risks of human health.

Sediment and suspended solids; soil erosion, construction activities, and urban runoff can introduce sediment and suspended solids into water sources affecting water quality and aquatic habitats

LEARNING SECTION 8CONTENTS ↑

Cont…………………………

Nutrient pollution; excess nutrients from fertilizers, sewage, and animal waste can lead to algal blooms and depletion of oxygen in water bodies, which can harm aquatic life and human health.

Toxic algae; certain species of algae can produce toxins that contaminate water sources during algal blooms, leading to health problems such as skin irritation, respiratory issues.

LEARNING SECTION 9CONTENTS ↑

Cont………………

Heavy metals; industrial activities, mining operations and natural sources can introduce heavy metals such as leading arsenic and cadmium into water sources, posing serious health risks, and cancer.

Radionuclides; natural occurring radioactive elements such as radium and uranium can contaminate water sources posing serious health risk.

LEARNING SECTION 10CONTENTS ↑

Cont……………………..

Emerging contaminants; include substance such as pharmaceuticals, personal care products and microplastics which can enter sources through various routes and cause health effects,

LEARNING SECTION 11CONTENTS ↑

Undertake immunization

Involves receiving vaccines to protect against various infectious disease. Vaccines stimulate the immune system to produce an immune response without causing the disease itself.

This helps body to develop immunity to specific pathogens, preventing illness and reducing the spread of communicable disease.

LEARNING SECTION 12CONTENTS ↑

Cont……………………

Immunization is critical public health intervention that not only protects individuals from serious disease but also contributes to community immunity or herd immunity.

Immunization schedules vary nby country and may include vaccines against diseases such as measles, mumps, rubella, pollion, influenza, hepatitis B, pneumococcal disease, and human papilomavirus(HPV).

LEARNING SECTION 13CONTENTS ↑

Educate community on food safety

Educating the community on food safety is crucial for preventing foodborne illnesses and promoting public health

Educate community on

Proper food handling

Safe food storage

Cooking temperature

Avoiding high-risk foods

Hand hygiene

LEARNING SECTION 14CONTENTS ↑

Cont………………

Awareness of food recalls

Symptoms of food borne illness

Safe food preparation practices

Cleaning and sanitizing

Personal hygiene

LEARNING SECTION 15CONTENTS ↑

Ensuring safe injection

Use sterile equipment

Proper needle disposal

Hand hygiene

Clean injection site

Safe medication handling

Proper injection technique

Single-dose vials and ampules

Avoiding needle recapping

Education and training

Monitoring and auditing

LEARNING SECTION 16CONTENTS ↑

Sources of vectors

Vectors are organisms that transmit pathogens from one host to another, thereby spreading infectious diseases. Common sources of vectors include;

Mosquitoes; transmitting disease such as malaria, dengue fever, zika virus.

Ticks; transmiting variety pathogens including lyme disease, tick borne encephalitis

LEARNING SECTION 17CONTENTS ↑

Cont…………………..

Fleas; transmit disease such plague

Sendflies; transmit leishmaniasis

Tsetse flies; transmit african trypanasomiasis(sleeping sickness)

Triatomine bugs; transmit trypanasoma cruzi

Blackflies; transmit onnchocerciasis( river blindness)

Rodents; transmit plague, leptospirosis

SUPPLEMENTARY LEARNING

Additional Study Notes

This section is separated from the source slides to make the lesson easier to revise.

Supplementary learning: Environmental health topics should be revised by linking the environmental hazard to its source, route of exposure, health effects, prevention and control measures, community participation, and the role of health workers. Priority areas commonly include safe water, sanitation, waste management, food hygiene, housing, vector control and prevention of environmental pollution.
