Levels of disease prevention

Primary prevention; it focus on preventing the onset of disease or injury before it occurs. It aims to reduce the risk of disease among healthy individuals and populations. Examples include vaccination programs, health education campaigns promoting health lifestyle (eg exercise, balanced diet, smoking cessation).

Cont……………..

Secondary prevention; this level involves early detection and intervetion to halt or slow down the progression of disease in its earliest stages, often before symptoms appear. Screening programs are common examples of secondary prevention such as mamography for breast cancer, pap smears for cervical cancer, and blood pressure checks for hypertension.

Cont……………..

Tertiary prevention; focuses on reducing the impact of established disease, preventing complications and restoring health and function among individuals alredy affected by a condition. Aim is to minimize disability, improve quality of life, and preventing futher deterioration. Examples include rehabilitation programs for stroke survivors, cardiac rehabilitation for heart disease patients.

Importance of disease prevention and control

Reducing health burden

Improving public health

Cost savings

Promoting equity

Enhancing resilience

LEARNING SECTION 9CONTENTS ↑

Determinants of disease prevention

Biological factors; genetic predisposition, age, sex and physiological factors play a role in disease prevention. Genetics factor scan influence susceptibility to certain disease, while age and sex may affect disease risk.

Behavioral factors; lifestyle choices, such s diet, physical activity, tobacco use, alcohol consumption and sexual practices, significantly impact disease prevention. Health behavior like eating a balanced diet, exersing regularly, can reduce the risk of chronic diseases and promote overall health.
