Definition of Gram Negative Bacteria

Gram negative bacteria: These are bacteria which appears red, after losing the colour of primary Stain and adapting the colour of a counter stain (dilute carbofuchsin or safranin, or neutral red) when stained by gram stain.

Morphological appearance of gram negative bacteria of medical importance.

Gram-negative are bacteria which have a rod or bacillus, comma shape, and are also gram negative as a result of having a thin layer of peptidoglycan and an outer membrane. Due to their rod shape, bacilli can only be arranged in a few ways, in contrast to round cocci, which can have several different arrangements.

The pathogenic are intracellular (they live inside the host cell normally

polymorphonuclear cells like macrophages)

Characteristics of Yersinia and Brucella

Genus yersinia

The genus yersinia includes species which are short, pleomorphic gram-negative rods that can exhibit bipolar staining.

Catalase-positive, oxidase-negative, and microaerophilic or facultatively anaerobic.

Most have animals as their natural hosts, but they can produce serious disease in humans.

LEARNING SECTION 31CONTENTS ↑

Yersinia species of medical importance includes

yersinia pestis, cause of plague in human

yersinia pseudotuberculosis cause of disease which resembles tuberculosis

yersinia enterocolitica, important causes of human diarrhea diseases

LEARNING SECTION 32CONTENTS ↑

Characteristics of Yersinia Pestis

Pestis is a gram-negative rod that exhibits striking bipolar staining with special stains giving its characteristic safety pin appearance.

not motile

grows as a facultative anaerobe on many bacteriologic media

growth is more rapid in media containing blood or tissue fluids and fastest at 30 °C

oxidase positive

Key Points

Gram negative bacteria lose the colour of primary stain and adapt the colour of secondary (Counter stain) stain.

There is a large group of gram negative bacteria but only some causes diseases to man, Including neisseria spp, haemophilus spp, vibrio. Gonorhoea, N.Meningitids, vibrio Cholera.

Most of these organisms are diagnosed by doing gram staining, culture, serological tests

LEARNING SECTION 40CONTENTS ↑

Evaluation

What is the gram negative bacteria related to gastrointestinal tract?

Which specimen is collected in order to diagnose cholera?

What are the diseases caused by neisseria gonorrhoea?
