SESSION CONTENTS
STEP 1: Presentation of Session Title and Learning tasks (5 minutes)
READ or ASK students to read the learning objectives and clarify
ASK students if they have any questions before continuing.
STEP 2: Indications of Amoebicides (10 minutes)
Activity: Buzzing (5 minutes)
ASK students to pair up and buzz on the following question for 2 minutes
ALLOW few pairs to respond and let other pairs add on points not mentioned
WRITE their response on the flip chart/board
CLARIFY and SUMMARIZE by using the content below
o Metrinidazole is the drug of choice in the treatment of all tissue infections with E
histolytica. They are not reliably effective against luminal parasites and so must be
used with a luminal amebicide to ensure eradication of the infection
o Tinidazole like metronidazole, it is also the drug of choice in the treatment of all
tissue infections with E histolytica. They are not reliably effective against luminal
parasites and so must be used with a luminal amebicide to ensure eradication of the
infection
STEP 3: Contraindication of Amoebicides (10Minutes)

STEP 4: Dose, Dosage and Course of Amoebicides (10minutes)
o By mouth, invasive intestinal amoebiasis, extraintestinal amoebiasis (including liver
extra-intestinal infection)
STEP 5: Side Effects and Adverse Effects of Amoebicides (10 Minute)
Activity: Brainstorming (5 minutes)
Ask students to brainstorm on the following question:

o Gastro-intestinal disturbances (including nausea and vomiting),
o Taste disturbances, furred tongue, oral mucositis, anorexia
o Very rarely hepatitis, jaundice, pancreatitis
o Drowsiness, dizziness, headache, ataxia, psychotic disorders
o Darkening of urine
o Thrombocytopenia, pancytopenia
o Myalgia, arthralgia
o Visual disturbances
o Rash, pruritus, and erythema multiform
o On prolonged or intensive therapy peripheral neuropathy, transient epileptiform
seizures

STEP 6: Interaction and Precaution of Amoebicides (minutes)
o Disulfiram-like reaction with alcohol, there for it should never be given with alcohol
or where there is a suspected use of alcohol
o Hepatic impairment and hepatic encephalopathy
o Pregnancy
o Breast-feeding
o Avoid in acute porphyria
o Clinical and laboratory monitoring advised if treatment exceeds 10 days
