SESSION CONTENTS
STEP 1: Presentation of Session Title and Learning Tasks (5 minutes)
READ or ASK students to read the learning tasks and clarify
ASK students if they have any questions before continuing.
STEP 2: Indications of Lipid Lowering Drugs (10minutes)
Activity: Buzzing (5 minutes)
ASK students to pair up and buzz on the following question for 2 minutes
ALLOW few pairs to respond and let other pairs to add on points not mentioned
WRITE their response on the flip chart/board
CLARIFY and SUMMARIZE by using the content below
used in lowering cholesterol level in blood
o Primary hypercholesterolemia
o Homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia
o Combined (mixed) hyperlipidemia in patients who have not responded adequately to
diet and other appropriate measures
o Prevention of cardiovascular events in patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular
disease or diabetes mellitus
STEP 3: Contraindications of Lipid Lowering Drugs (10 minutes)
Activity: Brainstorming (5 minutes)
Ask students to brainstorm on the following question:
What are contraindications of lipid lowering drugs?

o Persistently abnormal liver function tests
o In pregnancy (adequate contraception required during treatment and for 1 month
afterwards)

o An increased bleeding tendency has been reported due to hypoprothrombinemia
associated with vitamin K deficiency

o Bile acid sequestrates interfere with the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins; supplements
of vitamins A, D, and K may be required when treatment is prolonged
