SESSION CONTENTS
STEP 1: Presentation of Session Title and Learning tasks (5 minutes)
READ or ASK students to read the learning tasks and clarify
ASK students if they have any questions before continuing.
STEP 2: Indications of Cathartic Drugs (10 minutes)
Activity: Buzzing (5 minutes)
ASK students to pair up and buzz on the following question for 2 minutes
ALLOW few pairs to respond and let other pairs to add on points not mentioned
WRITE their response on the flip chart/board
CLARIFY and SUMMARIZE by using the content below
o Constipation
o Preparation for radiological procedure
o Preparation for surgery
o Lactulose is indicated in hepatic encephalopathy (portal systemic encephalopathy)
STEP 3: Contraindications of Cathartic Drugs (10 minutes)
Activity: Brainstorming (5 minutes)
Ask students to brainstorm on the following question:
ALLOW few students to respond
WRITE their responses on the flip chart/ board
CLARIFY and SUMMARISE by using the content below
o Intestinal obstruction
o Galactosaemia
o Acute surgical condition

o Acute inflammatory bowel diseases
o Severe dehydration
STEP 4: Dose, Dosage and Course of Cathartic Drugs (10 minutes)
o For treatment of constipation:
5-10mg orally at night
Or suppositories 10mg in the morning
o Preparation for surgery and radiological procedures:
Suppositories 10mg 1-2 hours before procedure
o For treatment of constipation
15ml twice daily adjust according to response
o Hepatic encephalopathy
30-50ml three times daily
STEP 5: Side Effects and Adverse Effects of Cathartic Drugs (10 Minutes)
Activity: Brainstorming (5 minutes)
Ask students to brainstorm on the following question:
ALLOW few students to respond

CLARIFY and SUMMARISE by using the content below
o Nausea
o Vomiting
o Flatulence
o Cramps
o Abdominal discomfort

o Local irritation on suppository application

o Lactulose enhances the anticoagulant effect of coumarins
o Avoid lactulose in lactose intolence
o Avoid excessive use in hypokalaemia
