SESSION CONTENTS
STEP 1: Presentation of Session Title and Learning Tasks (5 minutes)
READ or ASK students to read the learning Tasks and clarify
ASK students if they have any questions before continuing.
STEP 2: Indications of Topical Anti-infective Drugs (20 minutes)
Activity: Buzzing (5 minutes)
ASK students to pair up and buzz on the following question for 2 minutes
ALLOW few pairs to respond and let other pairs to add on points not mentioned
WRITE their response on the flip chart/board
CLARIFY and SUMMARIZE by using the content below

o Active against yeasts, including Candida albicans and Pityrosporum orbiculare

STEP 3: Contraindications of Topical Anti-infective Drugs (5 minutes)

What are contraindications of topical anti-infective drugs?

STEP 4: Dose, Dosage and Course of Topical Anti-infective Drugs (5
minutes)
o Once- or twice-daily application to the affected area will generally result in clearing
of superficial dermatophyte infections in 2-3 weeks
o Twice a day for 5-7 days
o 2-3 times a day for 5-7 days
STEP 5: Side Effects and Adverse Effects of Topical Antiinfective Drugs

o Photosensitivity
o Peripheral neuritis

o Allergic contact dermatitis occurs frequently with bacitracin

STEP 6: Interactions and Precautions of Antiinfectives Drugs (5minutes)
o Caution should be exercised when applying metronidazole near the eyes to avoid
excessive tearing
o Caution in pregnancy and in breast feeding
o Contact with mucous membranes should be avoided when using Allyl amines
